Opunake

The Opunake Golf Club is located 2km up the Namu Rd, 400 metres north of Opunake. The original club was a 9 hole links course located on the cliff tops behind the present Rest Home.

The present site was purchased in 1969 and opened for play in 1971.

From very rough and wet country, the course has been developed over the years into a challenging 18 hole, par 71 course. Sheep are still used as the predominant form of fairway management but during the spring and summer, the course is mown and groomed to a very presentable standard.

The course is 5343 metres par 71 for men and 4843 metres par 71 for ladies. There are 5 par three holes of which only one is less than 155 metres so length and accuracy are essential. A river winding across the course must be negotiated on three holes and can be intimidating.

The course is in its best condition during spring and summer when the fairways are mown and the many pohutakawa trees are in bloom.

A very modern and spacious clubhouse provides members and visitors with a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy the social side of golf. The clubhouse and course are also used by other groups and businesses for various activities.
