Urenui
Urenui is a picturesque 9 hole course with sea,river and motor camp boundaries,
located 1km off SH3 – 30 kms on the Auckland side of New Plymouth.
It is part of a public domain complex which is justifiably described as
the jewel in the crown of Taranaki’s holiday locations. Camping,
permanent baches, boat launch facilities and safe river and sea swimming
complement the golf course. Something for all the family.
Dedicated locals have developed this course over the last thirty years
from lupin sand-dunes and swamp with progress and improvement on-going.
In 2001 a 300 metre rock wall was built to hold back the encroaching waves,
which had already taken one teeing area and one green. The rock protection
has enabled the golf club to make improvements for all to enjoy.
Urenui is not a long course-5384 metres for men and 4792 metres for women.
However the small greens and tight approaches coupled with the lurking
hazards of riverbanks and sea wall offers a challenge to golfers of all
levels.
Different tee and pin placements add variety to the nine hole layout which
has a well appointed clubhouse offering panoramic views of the course
and the ever present Mt Taranaki.
