Westown
Westown
Golf Club is located on Upper Mangorei Road, south west towards the mountain
as the crow flies from the centre city. The popular city club was formed
in 1935 and was originally located at the current Francis Douglas Memorial
College site, hence the name Westown.
The club moved to its current location in 1959 and has today matured
into one of the top five courses in the province. Westown has hosted two
national womens interprovincial events and hosts the annual Westown Classic,
one of Taranakis premier golfing events on the mens calendar,
in February. Notable winners of this event include Michael Campbell and
Phil Tautaurangi.
Whilst the course at 5536 metres long is relatively short in length by
current day standards, the tree lined and undulating fairways demand accuracy
from the tee and precise iron play to the small sloping greens.
The par 72 course comprises an outward nine of 37 and homeward nine of
35. The front nine holes include three par fives which provide plenty
of birdie opportunities for the lower handicappers but any errant drive
or second shot is likely to be penalized by an out of bounds or internal
hazard.
The back nine features six par fours in a row with all holes requiring
an accurate tee shot to set up the approach shot. The 117 metre 16th is
the solitary par three on the homeward nine while the final two holes
are the longest par fours on the course, with the 18th being one of the
best finishing holes in the district.
